Is there anything so attractive as Clustered Mountainmint? Nay! I believe it wins gold in the looks and smells categories. There is no mistaking when you are gardening around it as its spearminty menthol-rich essence grazes your pant legs.
Clustered Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum muticum) is a vigorous, highly aromatic native perennial prized for its luminous silvery bracts and incredible pollinator power. Thriving in USDA zones 4–8, it grows 2 to 3 feet tall, spreads via rhizomes, and produces clusters of tiny, white to pinkish flowers from mid to late summer.
Also, Mountainmint is a BEE MAGNET. Holy smokes. Not just like for a few moments, but I have watched a single bumblebee buzz around this plant for close to 30 minutes once, it even napped it was taking so long. I almost bored of watching it. Just imagine how happy her hivemates were when she returned home full of mountain mint pollen. Oh to be a bee on the wall of that hive! Butterflies, too (see photos).
I like to watch this plant species sway in the breeze like a yardstick-tall metronome, only breaking its beat for when a pollinator lands upon one. I swear I could write music to this beat.
Like other species related to mint, it benefits from a little taming each spring to keep it growing in its area, but it is not overly aggressive, as it tends to cluster rather than spread far.
